Engine turns, got spark and fuel but no start. V70-XC70 98

Had an unusual one-time failure. When starting cold (at 50 degrees), my V70 spudered once and then it gave no signs that it wanted to fire. I cranked it for 5-8 seconds at a time and repeated this about every 1 minute for 4 or 5 times. At no time did it even hint at firing. I checked the spark and could smell fuel (hmmm). It finally started after about 10 minutes of sitting and has been fine ever since. It acted and smelled like it was flooded. Could this be?

V70 non-turbo.

Fuel from same gas station as always.

Gas cap on tight.

Never depressed gas peddle during starts.

Any suggestions?

If you search the archives on "Lawnmower Syndrome" you will

also find similar problems. By any chance did you start it

for a few seconds (as though mvong the car to get the lawnmower

out) and then turn it off? That can lead to a similar problem.

Paul listed all the common things to do to help. I'd also

consider changing the oil since quite a bit of fuel may have

washed down the cylinder walls into the engine.

By the way once it floods it is very hard to start since the

extra fuel keeps the piston rings from sealing (so no

    compression).

Our 95 has seen the problem twice. My S70, never (but it is

frequently run to high engine RPM which helps the valves to

rotate in their seats, reducing carbon build-up).

Yep it happens on the NON turbos....typically caused by too much carbon deposits not allowing the valves to fully close. Won't start because not enough compression...small little bits don't allow valve closure.then yes an overly rich condition in the cc.

    Suggestions:

    1) A few high speed, high rev runs to blow your engine out. Try to limit the low speed, very short, cold trips, moving the car in the driveway while cold is a killer.

    2) Run a good combustion chamber cleaner such as Amsoil PI through.

    3) Change your oil to synthetic.

    4) Change your fuel brand.

    5) Change your spark plug brand.
