rear main seal 850 94

Found the rear main seal on my '94 855 turbo leaking this morning, what a wonderful surprise. Is there any possibility that the seal is fine and a pressure build up inside the engine is the cause(like a clogged flame trap in the 240's). I really don't want to spend $900 on a repair.

Mahalo,

Mark

we got it done for $600. keep checking around until you find someone for 9 hours of labor who has experience. Anything more than 10 hours either doesn't have the experience or is going by the book on the number of hours to charge which is a rip. if it's just a very tiny drip hopefully warmer weather will cure it, but don't count on it.

Not sure exactly what the turbos use for crankcase ventilation but I know it's not a flame trap- those are only used on naturally aspirated models. Sorry, don't have an answer to your question.

Typically the flame traps should be checked and either cleaned or replaced every 30K miles (suggested) BUT in my experience, it's a rare occurance in the 850s compared to the older 200s/700s from years ago.

Check the flame trap and related hoses but I doubt that'll be your problem and usually once a seal starts to leak, it doesn't stop until it's replaced.

I missed the "turbo" part so there's no flame trap BUT there is still a PCV system, has everything (hoses) just no "flame trap" element.
