V70 2006 radiator fan always on...

Hello,

Model: V70 AWD 2006

Symptoms: engine running, radiator fan is always running (on).

Observation: everything look normal. Cooling fluid sensor behave normally: in the dash, we see it raising normally till 12'0 clock and it stay there without moving or even glitching. Heater in the car blow hot air. No check engine or warning message in the dash.

the fan is just running and running...

I went to a mechanic that raise some code: CCM-0063 Damper motor - temperature right internal fault. They clear everything and the fan was back to normal behavior (not running always) But after couple of days, the code probably came back and the fan is now always on again.

I don't know that that mean but for this, the mechanic wanted to replace the thermostat housing with the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. I'm not sure this is the right part to replace. I have the feeling that an internal temperature sensor is faulty (sensor under the hood measuring the temp in the engine area). I'm I right? What does trigger the radiator fan to start?

Hope you can help :)

Thanks

Bruno

You have 2 problems. The CCM-0063 refers to the climate control system under the dash, nothing to do with the engine fan.

The engine uses only one coolant temp sensor which your mechanic wants to replace. Unfortunately, that is now an expensive part which also includes the thermostat. Replacing the part might not solve the problem. You should also have a code outstanding for the ECM that points to the coolant temp sensor before you spend a bunch of money.

Time for a second opinion.

V70 2006 radiator fan always on...

Hello

Thanks for your answer.

Here the code I have ( I should have include this before):

CCM-0063 Damper motor, temperature right internal fault (DTC is found active)
CEM-4A31 Ejector sensor faulty signal (DTC is found active)
CEM-4A35 Fuel level sensor faulty signal (DTC is found active)
CEM-8F21 Winshield wiper faulty signal (DTC is found active)
ECM-520B A/C pressure sensor - signal missing (DTC is found active)
ECM-120D Air mass - signal too low (DTC is found active)
REM-6A03 Central lock motor switch signal too low (DTC is found active)

Everything else DTC is found not active or No fault found.

Is there something in those code that explain the radiator fan always running? Or justifying the thermostats + housing + coolant sensor change?

Let me know

Bruno

That's quite a list! Very impressive. And the car runs OK?

No problems with the ECT sensor (good) and probably the thermostat.

The AC pressure sensor could be. If the AC is on, the fan should also be on, but at low speed.

You also need to work on some of the other pending items...

Car is running fine.

I believe that a lot of these code were raised this winter at very low temp... I know that sometimes, when it`s very cold, we see some error on the dash and they go away.

Injection is fine, wiper are fine, air control in cabin work fine, etc. The only thing is that the AC as no pressure anymore. We need to have this fixed (summer is coming soon).

You believe that the AC code could be related to the radiator fan always running ? We are keeping the AC off in the car since it`s empty. But still, the radiator fan is always running.

Any other suggestion? We can have the AC fixed... would it solve the fan issue?

Sorry for insisting... thanks for your time

Bruno

I am surprised that the AC is out of gas, most unusual for your year. Probably the pressostat switch failed instead. Easy to fix, also easy to add R134a if the pressure is low but you need to know why there is a leak, if there is one. Remember, defrost also uses the AC, even if switched off.

From your description, the fan is on high. Most cannot hear the fan at low speed. This could be a relay problem instead of the ECT sensor, but clearing the codes would not stop the fan for a few days.

Hello Klaus,

Finally, the AC was fixed by adding some R134a and since then, the fan is only running when the AC is on, otherwise, the fan is not running. This is a good thing to know when you have an empty AC, your engine blower will always be on... The ECU is like that ;) Probably thinking that the AC is ON when measuring a low pressure or absent signal from the pressure sensor.

Now, we watch the AC... will it remain full ? for how long ? they but the blacklight color stuff while filling... vacuum was holding the pressure as well as the positive pressure when they filled it.

thanks

Bruno

Will have the AC checked this week.

As for the fan, clearing the code stop the fan from running always on ... this make me believe that a code is raised again after and fan start again. Probably no issue with the relay but if the AC is empty, the fan can run always on by default.

Will start by fixing the AC and see what happen with the fan after.

Thanks

Bruno
