Spring seat creaking? 850 1995

Okay, after searching the archives and not getting a definitive answer I'm going to throw my question out to you guys.

I am preparing to replace my struts and spring seats (will use XC90 seats) on my 850. The spring seat on the passenger side is toast. It squeaks and bangs on bumps. The drivers side suspension just started a low speed creaking noise. No squeaks. I've been told the creak is a strut noise but the archived posts seem to indicate it is the spring seat. Any thoughts? Anything else I should check out?

Thank You!

how much mileage do you have on the struts? If it's more than about 120k just go ahead and replace the struts, seats, bump stops, 2 lower mounting bolts, 3 top lock nuts.

Strut mounts/bearings are probably fine. Seems like they're good for 250k+. No one ever seems to need to replace these. Also I've heard the aftermarket ones are terrible, so you need to go OEM which means about $65 a piece.

180k on car and struts (as far as I know). I was planning on doing as you recommended above. In a previous post you had advised me not to replace the strut mounts.

So, my question is could the strut mount on the driver's side cause the low speed creak? Or possibly a sway bar end link? Or something else? If it is indeed the spring seat or the strut I am okay with that since I'll be replacing them anyway. I don't want to do this job and then still have a creaky suspension....:)

The end links can be easily checked by grabbing it with the wheel still on the ground and shaking it. If it moves, replace it. If you replace the strut, the endlinks need to come off anyway and are not expensive. I suggest using IPD endlinks, they are more robust and last twice as long as OEM.

The spring seat can easily be checked. Just take a large monkey wrench to the large nut on top of the strut and try to turn it clockwise. If it turns easily and does not try to spring back, the seat is toast.

With 180K, your struts do need to be replaced, along with the rear shocks which are quite easy to do. You will have a better ride.
