Control Arm replacement V70-XC70 1998

The front tires on my 1998 V70 wear unevenly and excessively (compared to the rear tires). I am looking at replacing the control arms. Do I need to replace the track rod ends at the same time? Are there any special tools required such as a balljoint separator? I don't have one of those, will any type do or is a proprietary Volvo tool reqUired? Also I am getting a humming from my right front wheel. Is that a bearing?

    Control Arm replacement V70-XC70 1998

Judging from this and your post above this, you need to do some suspension work. The front tires on these cars ALWAYS wear faster than the rear . . . a victim of turning while carrying engine load and suspension geometry. That's why we should always rotate tires :)

In your above post, you mention movement at 9 and 3. If it is just a bit of movement, it could be just the slight sway that the steering rack gives. However, your tie rod ends are probably toast. I'd replace both of them. Then get the car aligned. You do need a ball joint separator of some sort to get these out, as well as a 21mm bar to break the nut loose at the back of it.

Before buying new control arms, look at the two bushings and the ball joint. If they all look good and there is no play at 12 and 6, don't replace it. If rubber is torn or there is play, replace those.

I'd also check the swaybar endlinks while your at it . . . if you get clunking from the front those are often the culprit.

The final thing I'd check is the top rubber strut mount. The metal separates from the rubber and makes a horrible racket over uneven surfaces. To check it, I usually take the top strut nut off with the wheels still on the ground, then you can lift off the cap below it to see the mount. It will be obvious if there is a problem.

Welp, there's what I can give you for advice. I just replaced many of these parts today . . . then, stupid me, I put the tie rod ends on the wrong sides. They fit fine . . . until you turn the wheels too far. Horrible noises erupt. Don't do that.

    Have a good one!

    Nate
