Howdy All, looking to purchase an OBD II code scanner, does anyone have a recommended brand/model.

Thanks all

Peter

I use my laptop and this cheap USB one It reads O2 sensors, air flow, coolant temp, fuel trim and a few other things I can't recall at the moment. On other cars (like the SO's Buick) it reads fuel and manifold pressure, but not on any of my Volvos. For <$20 I think its money well spent. Unlike Klaus, I've probably averaged 10 codes/year over the last few years. Granted, most of them come from me unplugging components or vacuum leaks. Still, resetting them is nice.

I would like to try using my laptop but I need to find software for my MacBook Pro first. Any recommendations ?
A friend has a '98 S70 with a MIL, ABS, SRS light on that I would like to investigate.
Would like to be able to read ALL codes (trans, ABS, etc.......)
Will probably pick-up something like this just for the basices:

Nice looking scanner, but will not read/clear any SRS codes. The Swedish company that makes scanners for Volvo stopped selling to the public last year, it was advertised at $285 and could read every Volvo system. I didn't buy it because it didn't work for the 1998 year.

Notify your friend that as long as the SRS light is on, the SRS system will not function. No air bags or pretensioner for seat belts.

Your generic scanner might pick up an ABS code or two, most likely he needs the ABS module re-soldered.

I could be mistaken, but I thought the SRS was a dealer only code (or very high quality aftermarket scanners specifically designed to communicate with Volvo $300+). ABS I think can be read by some nicer scanners (I haven't found software to read the codes for ABS for free, but I've also never had a problem with it..) but I'd call and confirm before I spent money on a scanner.

I wish I either had the money to hire someone to program, or the ability to program myself. If you could build an emulator between Vadis (volvo software) and your cheap USB scanner so the computer thought it was talking to a DICE or VCT2000 (the older scanner, still works with older versions of Vadis). But alas, I'm trained in another field and don't have the patience to learn how to do it.

If you really want to blow your money, search for Volvo DiCE and you'll find some as low as $500 that will come with the software and read every system on your Volvos..

The generic scanners only do basic engine functions and none of the rest of the electrical systems. I found it cheaper to just stop at my local auto parts store and 'borrow' theirs. Of course, over the past 7 years, I have only had 3 check engine lights.

If you have a portable PC, your best bet is to get OBD software and a connector cable. Cheap and effective, just clumsy to haul to the car.

A 'good' scanner for $100 or so should also have real time running data on display, like the O2 sensors, etc.

Do not get the el cheapo that just says 'pass/fail'.
