Cruse Control V70-XC70 2003

I have had an "engine system service required" message intermittently for a few days, and now the cruise control is dead, ie "cruise" light on dash won't come on and there is no function. Are the two related? Is there any actual cruise control hardware to check out? BTW, car runs just fine.

    Cruise is integrated into the ECM. A common cause for failure is a bad brake pedal position sensor. Brake light failure will also cause cruise to stop working. There is no specific hardware for the cruise system

      It started working again so I am thinking flakey pedal position sensor, but mention of brake light issues makes me nervous. I will definitely check the brake lights frequently until I resolve this one.
