Trouble finding '02 v70 xc parking brake shoe replacements that actually fit, hole placement wrong V70-XC70 2002

My 2002 v70 xc had lost all emergency brake operation so I recently attempted to change out the parking brake shoes (and rear rotors/pads while i was there). The shoes were all metal, no pad...yikes. All was going well until I went to mount the new replacement shoes and noticed that the center mounting spring hole was in the wrong position. More searching online and I discovered that two versions are out there: The one I have which matches this diagram http://www.autopartsnetwork.com/images/catalog/brand/centric/640/11x08290.jpg known as "Centric Parts 111.08290" and the version Napa Auto Parts sells the "Altrom 0852802" which looks like this https://partimages.genpt.com/largeimages/968745.jpg -- notice difference in the middle spring mounting hole position and shape. Is this an error on behalf of Napa, Altrom, neither, or both? I brought them back into the store and he suggested I drill new holes in the right position. I figured I'd try ordering the Centric Parts version and I'm crossing my fingers that they match the diagram so I can get a refund for these Altrom shoes. Does anyone know what's going on with these two versions? Also, every parking brake shoe diagram Napa had on their computer matched their Altrom version (with the circular hole offset toward the rear).

I have two days where I'll need to drive without an e-brake...not thrilled about this ;) I've never used a parking brake in an emergency but murphy's law suggests I'll need to before tuesday when the new shoes arrive.

Trouble finding '02 v70 xc parking brake shoe replacements that actually fit, hole placement wrong V70-XC70 2002

First, an E brake will not stop your car unless you are going less than 10 mph and your shifter is in N. It is not intended to make your car stop, it is made to keep the car from rolling while in a parked position.

I have found that the replacement brake shoes from FCP have too much pad on them and do not work well until worn down a bit. I suggest you go to a dealer and get OEM shoes, they are not that expensive. Besides, you will also want to get new brackets that hold the shoes in position, as well as the 2 steel expander plates that attach to the cable and make the shoes spred into position. These 2 steel plates tend to rust and fuse into one piece of metal when not used regularly.

Get new springs! The old ones loose their elasticity.

Tip: Assemble the new shoes with the large spring in place, wrap them around into position and then put in the small spring. The small spring is easier to pull than the large one.
Grease any moving part with brake grease, especially the 2 plates and star wheel.

      Klaus,

Thanks. I was always confused about that because half the time I hear it referred to as an "emergency brake" and the other half a "parking brake". Your advice about the spring assembly order is good. I bought a new parking brake hardware kit with all the springs but when I was removing the old one I remember thinking to myself "Wow...this big spring isn't going to be fun to install." While the spring sizes matched in my kit, the "spacer" included in the kit is the adjustable/threaded kind (with the star wheel) while the ones in place on my v70 were just a fixed "H" piece of steel.

Also, my expanders look to be in great shape...very contrary to the condition of the parking shoes I removed (which were 100% disintegrated)!

I didn't even check fcp until now but oddly the parking brake shoes they display for the 2002 v70 xc are the same hole pattern as the Napa/Altrom replacements (the ones that don't fit my car). Between this and my H spacer rather than the adjustable star wheel I'm really growing curious as to what rear brake system is actually on this v70. Maybe FCP uses inaccurate parts photos.

Yet the IPD photo matches what I have V70-XC70 2002

This is IPD's version of Volvo's OEM 274271 parking brake shoe. It is what's on my car. Very confused now...heh.

FCP probably just uses their stock photo, and I really hate that for the same reason you do. How are we supposed to know?

I guess IPD is the way to go?? If the dealer price is too much, try www.tascavolvo.com for good OEM prices.
