a funny thing happened last month... V70-XC70

My mileage recently jumped-up by over 10%. I'm not complaining.

Six months ago I replaced my cat with a direct-fit aftermarket and my front o2 sensor with a direct-fit Bosch. The reason was my fuel economy and performance were dismal. At once the performance improved and the fuel economy was restored. The model is a na v70 that has 190k miles.

I drive mostly freeway, between 75-80, and averaged about 24.5 mpg. In the last month, and I've monitored several tanks of regular grade fuel, my mileage has averaged nearly 28 mpg. I have not done a thing to the car except for oil changes. I don't ever remember getting fuel economy this good. I wish the whole country had this problem....

What happened?
Should I call car-talk?
Was the car possessed and the demon left? (Can it become repossessed?)

    a funny thing happened last month...What year V70? V70-XC70

What model and year is your V70? For the family 1999 V70 with NA engine and manual transmission, we get about 28 mpg for freeway driving. At its best in summer with modest load, it has achieved 30-31 mpg. This is with 93 octane gasoline (real gasoline, pre-ethanol).

Call the car guys. They are fun and you may get an earful of insults for being a frugal Volvo owner.

It's been my experience with the turn of the warmer weather that economy goes up...less demand on the electrical system for heat, headlights (darker winter days).

I was averaging about 19 on my XC70, past three tanks have yielded about 21. Once I get these winter tires off and do a tuneup I reckon I will get a bit more altough fueleconomy.gov now pegs my car at 22 avg hwy MPG :-/

I got 31 mpg this weekend driving between 80 - 85 mph. Brother thinks it is the reformulation of the gasoline and free flowing cat, since replacement. I think I am going to keep my mouth shut and try not to jinx it.

Probably the freeflow cat did the trick. Or you developed a hole in the air filter and are running lean :>)
