Wheel beering hub replacement - struggling to get it back on and out on the road! V70-XC70 1998

I had planed to replace both of the wheel bearing huibs on my 1998 XC 70. I tried to follow the method on the bay 13 tutorial but ran into trouble.

After getting everything off the drivers side and installing the new part, I am having trouble getting the spline shaft to seat all the way into the housing. I did disconnect the ball joint and steering tie rod rather than disconnecting the back portion of the control arm.

Now I can't get the ball joint back into the hole and button it up. The new bearing hub assembly (timken) from FCP the cheaper one for 75 rather than the 125 Volvo part. It looks fine and seems to be a correct fit. The did clean up the rust on the interior of whole the hub mounts into.

It looks like I am a smidgen off on pulling the spline onto the hub. Until I get the ball joint back in place I don't want to torque the bearing or just turn the air gun on it.

I had a similar problem a year ago on a 94 wagon when I was replacing a passenger side axle shaft.

Is there a way out of the mess without towing to my friend garage? On top of it the ball joint boot is torn and it probably needs a new control arm anyway.

Sort of low on funds as I spent my tax refund on the bearing. The good news is the old one I took out was shot - so my guess on which side made the noise was right. But I also think the right one might be shot too.

Ideas?

You need to get some leverage with a long pipe or steel rod and press down to get the ball joint to fit in.
