Tailgate light always on V70-XC70 2006

My tailgate light recently is always on (along with the warning indicator that the tailgate is open). I have taken the light out in order to not wear out the battery. I have used WD-40 on the latch (which seems to be working properly). Additionally, the lights don't blink anymore when I lock the vehicle (seems to be related to the tailgate light problem). Any suggestions?

Thanks. Is the microswitch in the latch? If the light doesn't come on is it just best for me to replace the entire latch assembly or can the microswithc be replaced?

The micro switch is part of the assembly, unfortunately.

The latch on the top of the bumper can be moved, a couple of T40 screws. If you move the latch rearward, only do it about 1/16th of an inch at a time. Only move the latch on the bumper if the screwdriver closing the lock turns off the warning light. The warning light and the tailgate light work together.

Open the tailgate and lock it to the second click with a screwdriver. That should turn off the light. If not then the micro switch is kaput.

Otherwise, it is not getting to the full lock position when closing.
