2005 xc70 V70-XC70

I am just over the 0k mark on my 2005 xc 70 and I am going to flush the tranny. I have read articles on fluid and was just curious to the best to go with? Arent these trannies fluid specific as in not just any universal fluid?

you can use a universal fluid as long as it states that it has 3309 or toyota-IV compatibility.

Most of the synthetic multi-vehicle fluids seems to meet this specification nowadays. It's always good to check the bottle though.

Thanks for the answers! I couldnt remember the numbers to save my life which I guess thats just my age. I know the gear oil should be changed as well but I am thinking about letting the dealership do it for me since it appears to be somewhat involved with the drilling etc. on the first change but after that I should be able to maintain myself. Is lucas and some of the other high end synthetics a good choice for this application?

This whitepaper (sponsored by Amsoil) seems to indicate that Lucas is not a very good product actually.

The Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 is what I'm using in my BG and rear diff and this paper is what convinced me.

BTW I'm not an Amsoil dealer or even a fanatic. I have been sold on their gear oil though.

The diff might be different between the 1998-00 and the 2005 models.

Did you use Amsoil for the diff/BG straight out of the bottle, or did you add anything else. Just curious, it is starting to get warm here :)

BTW, by tranny fluid was down by about 1.5 quarts. PO almost wrecked the car! I am finding little things that he broke and fixing them. Grumble, grumble.

I saw conflicting reports on whether the rear diff in my 1998 needed limited-slip additive or not. The 1998 is an Eaton locking diff, I am pretty sure. You're right about the diff being different in later years though - more specific research would be needed to determine what fluid is recommended for the later models. The 1998 was a bit easier because it uses the rear diff from the 960/S90 which had pretty good documentation.

I decided to err on the side of caution and add the limited-slip additive. Amsoil sells their own additive called "Slip-Lock" I think, so that's what I used because I was at the Amsoil dealer already. I'm sure any limited slip additive would have been fine though.

The additive wouldn't hurt a diff that didn't need it, but would be important for one that does. I never really got a firm answer on whether not having the additive would actually cause damage or just create the 'locking chatter' that is common on 4wd systems with locking diffs... again I chose to be cautious and use it.

I followed your tranny fluid thread with interest. Hopefully a small mistake on the trans fluid level was the worst you'll find eh?

Correct, you need ATF that is known as 3309. Toyota has the same fluid and it doesn't cost an arm and leg.
