Rotting of tailpipe hanger V70-XC70 2005

I was at the dealer having a CPO-covered repair done, and the tech dropped the exhaust. He pointed out that the hanger about 4' foward of the rear bumper was rotting off the tailpipe. I pointed out to him how thin the material was where it is welded to the car, and seemed designed to fail.

He said "no problem, there is a repair kit - do you want me to price it for you?" And sure enough, Volvo sells a clamp, with a two-ended hanger rod attached, for $60+.

I see I can get it for $40 at FCP. What a racket. I think this affects many years, and several models. Oh for the days of my '95 850, whose exhaust was bulletproof. My pipe looks like it is rusting too, and will probably last only a few more years anyway.

That's a good option. I'm used to doing my own work, so I usually lean towards DIY. I still have to get this fixed, so your message is timely!

IF you get it welded, make sure you primer and paint it. No need to start the rust process the next day. Oh, disconnect the battery!

Known problem. And it is a big problem considering the history of the 850-70 cars with original exhausts lasting 200K+ miles. I guess the 'new' cars have gone the way of other manufacturers, get a new muffler at 100K or less.

My 1995 850 muffler looked rusty and ready to fall off. When I cut it in 2 pieces to get it out from under the car, there was a lot of stainless steel in very good shape. Of course, Volvo moved the hanger so I was required to also buy a new hanger!!
