Alternator or ground or ??? 850

I have a 95 850 with manual tranny and 310k miles.

yesterday driving home in the rain the idiot lights on the dash all came on. I thought not a big deal as I've seen this from time to time when I go though a big puddle.

only this time no squeal of slipping belt, no shudder or stumble to the engine. just the lights flickering on / off. Low Fuel and Service lights bright but others on enough to see in the dark.

My thought was water got in somewhere but today it is dry and the same thing is going on. Lights are not steady on but flicker. If I rev engine to 3500-4000 RPM all lights do go off. Car running fine and no other signs I notice.

Any ideas as to what is going on? Alternator going? or ground shorting out somewhere?

thanks for any help & advice

The worn brushes are in the voltage regulator. It shows as a separate unit in the diagrams and can be replaced. A good local alternator shop should be able to replace the brushes. Otherwise, you are looking for a new/rebuilt alternator.

The high rpm was the clincher.
