engine management problem 850

I just bought a 1996 850 glt which starts very well but engine races too much
, settles down....then races again....settles down.... then races again....
sometimes dies when stopped,
Sure would like suggestions as to probable causes.

I've had many 240s 740s 940s and a 960 but never had pulsating like this.
Any help is appreciated.

Could be a bad MAF too, if you've got a spare (or if you're at the junkyard pick one up, they should be ~$10, don't buy new) might as well try it. But look for air leaks first, unless you have the spare on hand.

Hi, sounds like engine management system is trying to find the right operating point but failing again and again.
check vacum leaks and/or cracks in air duct from air filter to engine.

Time to first check all of the vacuum hoses. Put in a new air filter while you are at it. Cabin filter also, just for kicks.
