Drivetrain 850

My husband was installing a new drivetrain. I purchased it from fcp groton:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/14273/nm/1993_1997_Volvo_850_Axle_Assembly_Front_Left/category_id/103

I have a 1994, non turbo, manual transmission and I am trying to replace the driver side. When we put in the new one it didn't feel like it was "set" into place, so we tried to pull it out and take a look to compare it to the old one. Now it won't come out. ITS STUCK!!!! Any suggestions? Did we buy the wrong part? Please let me know if anyone out there can help.

Margaret

When I replaced my driver's side axle half-shaft a couple of years ago, when I first inserted the new shaft into the differential, it became stuck about half-way through the insertion. With some wedging and pounding, I was able to remove the assembly and noticed that the Circlip on the end of the shaft was of a poor quality and had large burr which had caused an interference. If I remember correctly, the Circlip groove was chamfered more than I would expect, allowing the burr to catch and to shift the Circlip out of the groove, which is why the whole thing jammed. I removed the Circlip, carefully reformed it with a hammer and file and reinstalled it on the shaft. While on the shaft I continued forming the Circlip to reduce its diameter and I used some heavy grease to make sure it remained centralized on the shaft. Everything was fine after that.

Very scary though, to have a half-shaft half-way stuck.

LMAO glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. Would you recommend I use the old one if the new one has to be retrofitted. What did you use to get it out? I don't want to crack it or damage it in anyway. I was thinking of using a block of wood and a rubber mallet to knock it out. What method did you use?

Wood and mallet won't harm it, so I'd just knock it around a bit and hope for the best.

It came with what looks like a brass nut. Is it self locking or do I have to do something to it once I tighten it?

The driver's side should be 'hard' to get off, most need to be pryed with a large screwdriver to get it popped out.

Sounds like you done good so far.
