IPD turbo control valve V70-XC70 2001

Anyone care to evaluate IPD's replacement turbo control valve ?

I installed the HD TCV on my '98 V70 T-5M and could see a significant difference. However, I must tell you that I installed at the same time the Short Ram Intake and MSD Ingnition Coil Upgrade. In addition, I did the ECU upgrade and installed the cat back Sport Muffler some years ago.

So, with all of that, the car was already quite spry, but I could see from the boost gauge that boost was commencing at a lower RPM (2.0K - 2.5K RPM vice 3.0K RPM) and increased much more rapidly. On the IPD customer feedback for the TCV, I said that it felt like my car had been cured of asthma.

Did you have to order the vacuum lines separately or is that part of the TCV?

I ordered new vacuum tubing (in one piece) and clamps separately.

Darn! It would have been nice to get a yellow, red, and blue line cut to the appropriate length. I already have a bunch of black silicone line.

Check out this site for color silicon vacuum lines:

Not as classy as colored vacuum tubing, but serves the purpose: Colored electrical tape at each end of the three vacuum lines.

I asked Stylin if they would send me their intercooler pipes, but I wanted the top pipes red and the cooler bottom pipes blue - no go.

ACE hardware also carries colored electricians tape, just not the same as the solid colored vacuum lines.

How about gree lines for the EVAP system?

I do like IPDs TCV, I just may order it for my tired "R".

I can't specifically speak to its performance compared with a brand new factory unit, but I can confirm that it did show a huge improvement over a factory unit with 125K on it. Boost onset is now smooth and very predictable. Before, boost would come on unevenly and sporadically.

I bought into IPD's "HD" brand this time because the cost wasn't that much higher, and I liked the idea of a longer lasting valve.

If money is really tight, I learned that several Subaru TCV's are plug and play and you can get those for ~$12.

I had no noticeable increase with a LPT turbo. Then again, my stock TCV was working well...and its still a low pressure turbo. If you hook up a boost gauge do you notice any issues with spooling up when you open it up?

The LPT is designed to kick in early (1500+) and just boosts a little. If the HPT can start building boost at 2000 instead of 3500rpm, that is a major difference.

Converting an LPT to HPT is cost prohibitive, plus the problem of the bearings and wrist pins not designed for the pressure.

A guage for the LPT is useless, unless you hook up a normal vacuum gauge and use it to get the best fuel economy.
