After two trips to the dealer reporting the very same gas door issue, it still won't open until toggling the switch 5 to 10 times. The techs lubed the door on first trip, no luck. Then they replaced a window switch solenoid (?) which interacts with the gas door circuit. It worked fine for the next two gas fill-ups but then started behaving like before. My wife came back last night completely pissed off as she couldn't get to open the door at the gas station. I tried it this morning at it finally opened after several tries. I know there's a way to manually open it, but it isn't convenient. Any suggestions here?

My 98AWD did this for a few months. Dealer couldn't fix it, so I got some spray lithium grease and sprayed the plastic lock tab and everything inside. It's been working great since.

Check the central locking switches on both front doors as either (if its contacts are failing) will cause your gas door to also fail.

We're seeing a few of these lately. The Power window/central locking switch assemblies are failing. Most dealers now stock them, we do.

BTW, there is no gas door release cable or lever anymore as they apparently think it's no longer necessary.

All that I can say is that I empathize. Had the same problem - with about 2 gallons of gas in the car and on a Saturday afternoon - and it did prove to be the power window switch that was the culprit. Ya, should keep more gas in the car. And I do now, given this history....

It is ridiculous that Volvo removed the redundant system that allows for the manual operation of the gas door.

My power window switch and gas door stopped working and I also nearly ran out of gas because I couldn't open the gas door on a Sunday. The power window switch wasn't working for about a week and I didn't realize that it also had an effect on the gas door. Before I had a chance to contact the dealer on Monday, everything mysteriously began to work again.

I had that problem when I first got the car. I could hear the click when I hit the switch but the door wouldn't come open. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a recurring problem that they were aware of and had a fix for. The fix was a stronger spring on the door which they installed. Haven't had a problem since.
