What to look out for in buying and 850 nonturbo 850

I'm new to this forum, and am in the market for an 854, preferably GLT, mid 90's. Is ther a good source of info on what to look for when shopping for a used 854?

Thanks,

...distinct tapping noise from lower engine. If so, run like hell.

Re: What to look out for in buying and 850 nonturbo 850

Thanks for the tip. And thanks to rdiedrich for the info source suggestions & the model year opinion. As it turns out, the '96s are in my price range of $12-$13K-ish.

Question for 850kg95: would that noise be from a crank or rod bearing? Is there an inherent weakness with the bottom end of nonturbo versions?

Also, I'm hearing from folks who deal/repair these cars, that some of the 'little things' that go wrong can be costly and annoying. Such as: cam sensors, oil leaks, motor mounts, subframe mounts, plastic parts breaking in the interior, sloppy shift linkage, sunroof binding, etc.

Anybody had these problems? Would you recommend that I steer clear of cars with these?

Just for background's sake, I'm currently driving a 245 'stick' wagon, with 175K miles, and am interested in upgrading to the higher performance and better appointed 854. I'm happy with the reliability of the 245, and I don't want to get into a situation with an 850, where I'm chasing problems continually. I wouldn't be able to afford the cost or the time.

You opinions are greatly appreciated.

Jim, Consumers Guide and sites like Autotrader and Edmonds will help you. In my humble opinion the 96 or 97 was the best of the 850's. I have a 96 exlease which has 62000 trouble free miles.

Good hunting
