oil leaks on V70 V70-XC70 2001

can running the cruise control for a couple of hours cause oil leaks or a transfer case to fail?? i have 150,000 on my car and i drove the it with the cruise control, around 70 MPH, and now she is burning excess oil. i just had the transfer case replaced, and an o ring for the turbo return line replaced in the last 2 weeks. any ideas from all you Brick mechanics??

    oil leaks on V70 V70-XC70 2001

First, thanks for the quick responses. We drove 9 hours from CT to WV. Yes, there are some drips. I'm not home to check my records, as to what weight and type of the oil is in the car, but what would be is the difference between using synthetics and regular dino oil and the weight of the oil?? I will have to check the PCV later.

Thanks a lot and Merry Christmas,

    oil leaks on V70 V70-XC70 2001

When I go RT from the twin cities to Denver, it is a 12 hour drive and the speed limit is 70-75mph. That means cruise is on for the entire trip.

Cruise control has nothing to do with oil consumption, it just maintains the speed you set instead of using a gas pedal.

What weight oil are you using? Is it synthetic? If there are no drips under the car when parked, I would check the PCV system.

+1 on the PCV...and also for the synthetic. I had a 98 S70 that I started using M1 in and on a long trip from MA to NC I stopped for gas and realized I had been leaking oil a bit. Luckily I put regular Mobil oil in and the leak "stopped"...once down to NC I had an oil change done and issue never came back.

      Regards,
      Steve

        oil leaks on V70 V70-XC70 2001

Hello rdonofrio, Are there visable drips or puddling of oil under your car when you first move it? Or does the dipstick level simply go down after a high speed drive? Also, why did you mention the transfer case? The transfer case, aka bevel gear, lives in it's own little oil bath-completely seperate from the engine. FYI: Do a search on bevel gear lubrication. At 150,000 miles you'd do well to have that fluid changed. Maintain your gorgeous car. Merry Christmas, Kira

          oil leaks on V70 V70-XC70 2001

Hi all, I have an update on my car. I have synthetic 5W30 oil in it and I think I blew the transfer case again!! (can I start swearing now??) Fortunately, I am not the person who installed the TC and I have a 1 year guarantee. Is there something attached to the TC that would cause it to fail??

          Thanks in advance.

            bevel gear problem V70-XC70 2001

The bevel gear can dry up and really mess up the rear wheel use of your car. You could try adding some synthetic gear oil as an emergency fix, if the oil is low.

Many people just remove the prop shaft and live with FWD. Of course, with all of the snow, it is not something you want to do right now.

                bevel gear problem V70-XC70 2001

That's a real bummer with all of the snow on the East coast. You could visit a shop and have them put it on a lift to remove the 16 bolts and put the prop shaft in the back of the car, if it becomes a real problem.

                  bevel gear problem V70-XC70 2001

Ok, I now know what happened here. First off I blew the transfer case again (and fortunately, Volvo and the shop are warranting the work and the parts.) About 6 months ago, my shop recommended I should have 4 tires added, because 2(only 2 were replaced) were worn without diagnosing the problem of why the tires were worn (see the next sentence for the issue). The issue was bad tie rods and worn busing which were replaced about 2 months later and still the tire issue was not revisited. Around Thanksgiving, I took the car from CT to WV, about an 8 hour drive. We blew transfer case #1 around Pittsburgh, PA. Around the beginning of December a new rebuilt transfer case was installed and again no new tires (are you seeing a pattern here??). A week later we blew transfer case #2 on a trip back to WV (I was visiting family for Christmas). So now, we have ordered transfer case #3 and new tires. The moral of the story: always have matching tires on your AWD vehicle. They have to be properly inflated as the transfer case is very sensitive.

                    bevel gear problem V70-XC70 2001

Two new tires and a long road trip will destroy the splines in the bevel gear box. I am surprised the Volvo dealer didn't catch that, it would void the 1 year warranty.
