245 vs V70 in slippery conditions

Yesterday we had 4-5" of snow and a little freezing drizzle last night. I took my '87 245 to town this morning and there were ice free tracks on the highway (2 cars in the ditch and one accident in 30 miles). The 240 did not seem to react to running up on the icy strips.

Tonight we took dinner to a friend who just had a knee replacement. Same road, slightly less ice than this morning. Mary's V70 hunted like crazy on the slippery spots. She has slightly newer tires and the low tire was at 34psi (vs 35 for the rest). It was very uncomfortable to drive.

Any idea what's going on ?

Thanks

Greg

my 2 cents worth -- We bought an '85 240 new w/M46 & limited slip. It would go anywhere in the snow, and did reasonably well on ice. Traded it in for a '98 V70, 5-speed & tracs. The V70 is definitely inferior on the slippery stuff -- just can't get the traction with the light alloy engine in front. Still have the V70 (311k) and a couple 240s. I still prefer the 240s in the snow, if icy either will do - I just start out in 2nd or 3rd and take my time.

Snow or all-season tires on the 240?

My 244 with AW70 (slushbox) and snow tires was great in snow and ice. I even remember passing SUV's in certain conditions! With all-season tires it was marginal in snow and nearly useless on ice.

Probably just the brand of tires and the tread pattern, not the pressure. Not all 'all season' tires are created equal. Then, the 2004 should not wander over slick spots, the ABS and TRKS should take care of that.

I suggest an alignment might be needed. Even it it is just a little bit off, ice will have a dramatic effect.

The V70 should have been better than the 240, hands down.

Maybe tires or traction control? Tire brand might be bad on ice. Nexy time try shutting off the traction control and see what happens. Maybe that's why it's hunting. You might also consider lowering the tire pressure for the winter.

Does the 240 have snow tires? My 240 was almost undrivable on ice without snow tires. Without snow tires I find it hard to believe that a 240 is better than a V70 on ice.
