FM Radio Issue 850 1996

On the stock Volvo radio unit, my father informed me that in their '96 850 the FM signal cuts in and out.

They live in a very flat area, with the nearest hills/mountains some fifty miles away.

Is there anything specific to which I should turn my attention?

    I got my 850 this summer , and the first thing I did was to yank the nice sounding
    Volvo AM/FM/Tape player out for a CD player.
    You can have the radio for the UPS shipping expense from the Boston area.

    I've had my 1995 850 for 8 years and have had this same exact problem the entire time. A friend of mine had a 1996 850 and his did the exact same thing. The point is (anecdotal evidence only) this seems to be a very common issue.

    Back to my 850, I've already replaced the antenna mast unit because it broke - that didn't fix the FM radio. The radio unit in the car is also from an S70 (upgraded by previous owner) and evidently that doesn't do any better than a stock 850 radio.

    I've never tried anything to fix it specifically, but knowing what I know, it seems like a lost cause.

    Same issue here.

    Bought a 96 850 turbo last weekend with SC-816 unit, and FM stopped working within 2-3 days.

    Have tried removing power to reset, re-entering security code, and every function that is in the owners manual - with no luck.

    Started thinking that unit went bad, the antenna/connector was suspect, or one of the kids pressed something that might have messed it up.

    Today I found a post online that explains some "hidden" FM modes in this unit:

      Thanks for the link - my radio is a strange beast. First, need to replace the antenna - wondering how much of a hassle THAT will be.

    My 1993 does the same thing. A good slap on the right side of radio brings it back to life.
