Wagon Volvo bars from EBAY seem to fit ok on my sedan. 850 1995

They were pictured on a rackless 850 wagon in a junk yard and said to fit all 850s but now that the arrived then i read some 2003 and 2007 old posts here referring to actual small differences , and remember when thinking about buying 'new' the web site below had a 'wagon' or 'sedan' 83-87 drop down menu option.

the roof racks are at the very bottom of page.

Yep the bars do have little attached 'wagon body' picture in paper, as per a post.

The rubbers on the bars do seem to be a bit inside the gutters, anyone BTDT or maybe someday I'll see if I can find someone that wants to switch wagon for sedan sets - if they do in fact differ.

For now - I was just going to put a 20 pound bike up there for short distances anyway.

Don't know the answer to your question, I'm afraid, but I wonder how you are mounting the bike up there. I have load bars for my wagon but haven't looked into the accessories available.

I've heard that Volvo bars are the same as Thule. Does anyone know if that's true?

      Thule square 850 1995

The bars look like the standard rectangular cross section thule bars that I have for my other cars. I have some thule bike racks from the mid-80s that look like they'll fit perfect.

it is my understanding that Thule makes the load bars for Volvo, and probably the 'generic'/universal ones they sell that fit on Volvos are of a very similar design. I can't say for sure if they are identical though, and it would make sense if they're not because they fit on many different makes and models.

One thing I suspect is unique to the Volvo ones is the little pin that fits into a small hole in the door 'jamb'/frame. If you open one of your doors you will see there is a small cylindrical slot in the top of the door jamb on the car. On the Volvo load bars (the ones that run side-to-side) there is a little pin that fits into this cylindrical slot for locating the bars correctly and also to provide some stability. I suspect this pin/slot configuration is not on the universal bars as I can't imagine every car they fit on actually have that little cylindrical pin slot as well.

That's about what I thought. I have bars, and want to know what my options are for bike racks, etc. that will attach correctly.

yeah okay. It looks like Thule has 'aero bars' and 'square bars' so you just need to figure out which yours are (shouldn't be that hard eh?) and then I would think you could use any Thule accessories for those style bars.

Interesting, my 1998 load bars fit on my 1995 sedan. I no longer remember if the fit was perfect, it has been a long time, but they did fit into the door holes.

There is a difference for front and rear. If yours touch the painted surface, make sure you wax that area before putting the bars on.
