How often should the oil be changed on a 1999 V70xc i.e. yearly or half yearly?

That depends on your driving style and climate. Short, cold engine trips are hardest on the engine.

Start with synthetic oil, either 5W30 or 10W30. Synthetic allows you to drive 5000-7500 between changes. If the oil is 'clean' after 5K miles, you can also consider just changing the filter and topping it up with a quart of new oil, and going another 5K before a mandatory flush.

If you do a lot of highway driving, 7500 miles is not a problem because there will be fewer contaminates. I usually 'discount' any trips over 500 miles because the oil doesn't get 'dirty'. So if I take a round trip to Colorado in one week (2K miles), that does not get added to my normal oil change interval.
