Replacing driver door and lock V70-XC70 1999

Good morning to all.

Brickboard seemed offline this weekend.

I finally bought a used door for replacing the dented driver door. Does anyone have detail instructions of how to change a door; especially of how to change the door lock? For some reason, my v70 has only one lock (on driver door) so it is critical to change the door lock. It is too risky to rely only on the remote.

Thanks much.

Replacing driver door and lock V70-XC70 1999

Ordered a Haynes manual last week.

Could not wait for the book and tried again this weekend. I was lucky enough to get the handle out and following door swap was cake-walk.

Different from the lock on 850 that lock cylinder can be removed (with a key), there is not obvious way to separate 1999 v70 lock cylinder from its shell. There is a steel strip that holds lock cylinder shell in place. It can be seen from the access hole and there may be a special tool that can be used to pull the strip up to release the lock.

What I did was:

1. remove the 2 screws that holds the door handle.
2. pull handle straight out as much as you can. At the point it can not be pulled further, twist handle downwards. By trial and error, you will be able to slip the handle out of door/lock lever. and the handle is free to be taken out.
3. loosen the steel strip holding the lock shell, remove the plastic cover (for the key hole) and take out the lock cylinder with shell.

The lock cylinder is easy to replace. Open the door and take off the triangular cover above the latch. Do not take out the two torx screws! In the access hole is a metal catch, just push on it and slide the lock out of the door handle.

The Haynes manual for the 850 states that the key needs to be in the door, but using the new donor door, you should be able to pull out the lock with just about anything that can grab it.

Slide the new lock in until it 'clicks' into place. Note which way is right side up.

Klaus and others,

I tried and was able to pull out the lock cylinder from my 850 (as suggested). But, 1999 V70 seems different. There is no place to press in the access hole. With 850, one can see lock cylinder movement; but not with V70. Does anyone have a copy of V70 repair manual? I heard there is a UK version.

Thanks,
Paul

Sounds very easy! Thank you a lot, Klaus.

BTW, do you recall the size of torx socket needed for door hinge?

I am going to check the Haynes manual for the 850 too.

The TwinCities did have a small winter storm this weekend. The 8-10 inches of very heavy snow coupled with a strong breeze knocked power out for close to 90,000 customers. I am afraid that Jarrod was without power from Saturday morning early to Sunday night at about 7pm. I feel sorry for his wife and 2 small children, cold and dark are not fun.

Are you refering to the T40 screw that holds the door strap on? Remove the bolt and then unplug the electric bundle before loosening the hinge screws.

Remember, the doors are quite heavy! And have the glass lowered somewhat so you can use the top of the frame to hold on to. A friend is always good to have during installation.

Thank you again for the detail description. It is always good idea to disconnect battery for this job, right?

You called 8-10 inches of snow a small storm? You guys really have fun winters.

Have a good one.
Paul

No need to disconnect battery. The only live wire is the one to the door switch and interior bulbs. Those are disconnected when you unplug the main wiring for the door.
