Hi, i am new to this forum, and new to Volvo's this being my first one. i have just bought a 1999 volvo v70xc 77k 1 previous owner most of the service history intact, it runs great thou does not start every time looked at the plugs and they are not very good so i believe a service is due. otherwise as i said she runs great not a spot of rust antwhere to be found. i would be very interested in feedback of what i should be looking at doing, now and in the future, i bought the car to tow a caravan i have also just purchase and again which will be a first.
Cheers,

Go ahead and replace the plugs, they are probably original anyway. If you plan on towing a caravan, flush the transmission fluid. Flush the bevel gear oil, sometimes known as the transfer case.

Make sure the tires are the proper pressure and all tires are the same brand and tread. Rotate the tires, front to back, every 5,000 miles or so.

Only use synthetic engine and transmission fluids, a bit more expensive but worth it in the long term.

On long hills, down shift to 3rd gear when towing to ease pressure on the engine and transmission.

You also need to check to see if the cam belt has been changed, as you do NOT want this to break. It's also good to replace the serpentine belt every 50k miles.

Finally, I once had a strange non-starting problem on my 850. Replaced plugs and dist. cap to no avail. Ended-up needing a new rotor....

Do not wait too long to replace the timing belt and tensioner. They were supposed to last for 105K miles in the USA, the belt was fine but the early model tensioners tended to fall apart at 80,000 miles. The new tensioners are easily good for 105K or more.
