Long crank before start after sitting > 15 minutes S40-V40 2001

Well we have put 23,000 miles on our 2001 S40since we bought it last June, it only came with only 50k miles so we've added almost 50% more miles but it's been great. The past couple weeks however we have noticed that when driving at slow speeds in the morning, sometimes the engine is hesitating a bit or feels like it lacks power, but it's fine once warmed up.

Then the past 2 days it has been cranking without turning over for much longer than usual. Yesterday I had the battery, starter and alt tested and battery was low (it was the ORIGINAL battery) but starter and alt fine. We put in a new battery and figured we were done, after all it did recently get cooler here and rain - usually the death blow for a low battery. Went home, parked, had dinner then went out an hour later and the same thing happened - crank crank crank then start finally. SO it wasn't the battery, or at least it was not just the battery.

So today I took it back to the garage near my work (not a Volvo specialist but has done good work for me in the past). THey didn't have time to look at it after it sat there all day (fair enough I was a drop in, but waste of a day when the car could have been getting fixed). I put a new air filter in it too because the old one was due for change and it was dirty, thought maybe it was not getting enough air - but that didn't help.

I have noticed that fiddling with the gas pedal - giving it a quick tap - seemed to help.

I suspect this is maybe a sticking throttle body or something? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I know that S40s are notorious for fuel pressure regulator problems. Causing the car to crank for a long time (without a check engine light).
Maybe that would be a good place to start

Let the car sit for a few minutes, and then test the fuel pressure at the right side of the fuel rail. You should get a healthy squirt; if not, you've got a bad check valve in the fuel pump, or possibly a bad fuel pressure regulator. That last one may go with the low-speed hesitation as well.

I can't do that kind of testing myself any more, we live in a condo no car maint. allowed in the garage and especially no gas squirting!

We had the fuel filter changed Friday and put in some Seafoam, hoping that there was just sludge in the fuel injectors etc but so far it is still doing the same thing. Car sits for more than 15 minutes and it cranks but no turn over, I floor the gas and it starts up.

Flooring the gas pedal while the starter is engaged turns off the fuel injectors. Given your description, you have a vacuum leak somewhere causing an over-rich conddition.

It NEVER gets COLD in San Jose! Cool, perhaps.

          Hi Klaus,

Is that consistent with the fact that the car starts fine if it has been turned off for less than 10 minutes though - and runs and idles fine once started?

No codes or cel though. Any clues where to start looking for a vac leak? Once running the car is fine. Did I mention my husband rsn it almost out of gas a few weeks ago, engine was stuttering - this problem started soon afterwards.

Update - it turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. $450 later the car was starting like a champ again.

Thanks for letting us know, Tina. Sorry that it cost so much for so little.

          Merry Christmas,

          Klaus
