Replace timing belt on '99 S80 T6 just pulled from 4 years storage? S80 1999

Hello, all,

I'm back in the States following four years in Japan (Navy). I just pulled my '99 S80 T6 out of the storage facility (contract said they started it once per month). Car has 70K on it. Took it to Volvo dealership for cracked turn signal and mandatory registration inspection. Car passes inspection, so no issue there. However, dealership guy recommends timing belt replacement. His rationale: belt good for 105K miles or 10 years. It's been ten years, and it was in storage.

So replace the timing belt now and have that piece of mind? Or is this overly conservative?

Thing ran perfectly from Edison, NJ where I picked it up, to Newport, RI.

Thanks.

Carol

Replace timing belt on '99 S80 T6 just pulled from 4 years storage? S80 1999

I was just asked by a friend about the cost of replacing the timing belt on his S80. The estimate was $950 for the belt change, Tune-up (spark plugs, engine air filter, fuel induction, throttle clean) $540, both for $1200.
I'm not familiar with these cars, I have RWD cars.
    Is this reasonable?

That's a lot! Especially for spark plugs, etc...$540? I had the timing belt changed on my S70 for $400 when I first got it and didn't know anything about it; it is not that much more complicated on an S80.

Find a good independent mechanic and give them a call. There's usually 1 or 2 good European car places around most areas...I live in a small town, and we've got one.

1999 was the first year of the 'new' tensioner and belt, which left a lot of people with broken engines. Change both along with all of the fluids. Treat your engine like it was new for the next 1,000 miles or so, the valve springs will thank you for the gradual increase in speeds.

    YES! absolutely replace it.

Do other basic maintenance things like changing the ATF, oil, coolant, and brake/PS fluids as well. Sitting for long periods of time isn't good for anything in cars.

Thanks, folks! All very helpful. May shop the job around to see if there is a shop other than the dealership that can do it for less. There are a SLEW of Volvos running around in this town, so presumably, there are some independents who work on them.

      Cheers,

      Carol

There's nothing particularly 'Volvo' about doing the timing belt on these cars. If the shop has changed a t-belt on a modern DOHC interference engine and they know how to follow the directions in AllData or Mitchell they should be able to handle this job.

If you are in RI, yes there are tons of Volvos. I've heard good things about car emporium in Warwick, maybe they would be a good independents.
