Help! pinion problem - rack replacement V70-XC70 1998

HELP
I'm replacing the rack on my 98 V70. I've been stuck at the same point for hours. I can't get the universal clamp all the way on the pinion (see pic). Is there a trick that I'm missing?

    Two questions,

    1) You sure its completely aligned?

    2) If you move the joint out of the way can it move far enough into the space (IE nothing is keeping it from getting itself in there, right?)

      Thanks tmannian,

I'm 90% sure it is aligned correctly. I had it a ways in (half of the slot visible) and could get no further so I pulled it out and started over. It went in easy to a point. I also disconnected the hoses, and removed the studs and brackets so I would have room to get a good alignment.

If I understand your question yes, I can move the pinion into the space where it would be if it was all the way in.

If I could keep the steering column from moving so much I think I could force the rest on the way on.

I'm under the impression that the flat part should be centered, you shouldn't see the splines through that bolt hole when its all the way in.

I can't tell in your picture whether it plays that way or not...

It should fit in without too much trouble. I've never heard of there being a press tool required...
