Ignition switch autopsy notes 850

I just replaced a flakey ignition switch where the ABS and Trax lights
came on and the day headlights wouldn't without fiddling with the key.

It's easy to change out take 2 T-25 head and 2 T0 head screws out
and remove the shroud around the steering wheel.
2 screws and you can move the directional stalk out of the way
then pull the connector off and 2 flat head screws get the switch
in your hand.

You can get the cover off the switch by prying out 4 crimps and see that
there's a ball detent in the cap. It had dried up grease, and there are cam disks inside to open and close the different contacts.
Those disks could use a little dielectric silicone so things work better.
They might bind the points and move the support arm a little.
The arms that hold the contact points looked less than 100% sturdy
with a few of the contact points not aligning well.

Since it isn't so hard to sway the switch, it might be worth opening
up a flakey switch and clean out the old grease and use new dielectric
silicone, reset the four crimps and
maybe get some more years of service, who knows?

    excellent write up B.B.

This is exactly the kind of thing we all like to see on this board.

Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing.

      More 850

      Thanks for the roses! :-)

Since that post I got a point file and cleaned up the 4 sets of points
      some were pitted.
Then I cleaned the cap that has the detent holes, dried up grease and
      some wear, with brake cleaner.
Then used brake cleaner on the switch assy. Then I found some crap
on the cam surface that might have been part of the points when the switch
was virginal. I had to struggle to scrape it off with the point file and
wonder if that tiny dot of metal on the cam surface could have dragged the
contact arm out of kilter. Then a little fine grit wet and dry paper on the nasty spot on the cam surface.
Then blast with brake cleaner , and apply dielctric grease to the detent holes
in the cap and the two cam surfaces.
Then smack the 4 crimp sufaces back at the vise with a 5/32 round punch.

Now I'm sitting with an unknown quantity ignition switch, and wonder if
my curiosity will overwhelm my inertia to take out the new switch and try the old one to see what happens.... stay tuned :-)

Oh, Yes! I'm grateful as heck to all the support I get from Klaus and others here on the 850 board...I'm on the steep part of the 850 learning curve and really appreciate the help.

      Bill
