Changing fuel filter on AWD 98-00 FYI V70-XC70

Today was fun! I replaced my 185K Nivomats with a set with only 88K miles on them. One of my originals was leaking fluid badly, so I thought it best to replace both.

My next garage will have 12 foot ceilings and a lift! This would have been so easy without a jack.

ANYWAY, I also changed the fuel filter. After getting the wagon floor board out of the way and lifting the large inspection plate behind the rear seat, I still couldn't figure out how to remove the lines. So I sprayed PBBlaster on top of the bolt for the holddown strap, and also the threads underneath.

After a long break, I was buttoning everything up when I noticed another inspection hole under the wiring bundle. Those sneaky guys at Volvo! With that plate off, it was a 15 minute job to swap fuel filters. The filter must come out on the bottom of the car, right over the exhaust pipe, so do this with a cold engine.

You're not just going to put a monkey pit in the garage?

Also did you have to vent (and drain) the filter or did you just let the little bit of fuel leak out?

LOL. I would just fall into the pit someday!

The engine had been off for quite a while so there was no fuel pressure. Of course, a few drops did dribble out of the filter, it is half full of fuel, but no big deal.

I didn't feel a need to touch the schrader valve, I just figured that any fuel that would come out would just fall on the garage floor anyway. No rags needed.

Hopefully this will make my fuel pump last a little longer, less strain.

Klaus
