Throttle position switch? 850

Where is the switch that tells the ECU your foot is off the gas?

I think I've fixed the vacuum leaks, but there's still some high idle rpm
so I guess there's a key adjustment out of whack.

Bill

Try disconnecting the battery for 10-15 minutes to reset the fuel table (LTFT)settings. The idle will initially seem rough at first but should settle out after a little driving and the LTFT data is reset.

      Throttle position switch? 850

Today I replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses.
I looked at the throttle drum adjustment and had to shorten up
the link a tad to get the throttle drum to seat fully.
I couldn't hear any clicking from the throttle switch at all.
Also I found a nasty split in one of the vacuum lines that I replaced
the other day, ach! it was crappy rubber.
So I got some new vacuum line at the Volvo dealer and Bingo the idle
seems fine and the check engine light stays off.
Maybe the throttle position switch was never showing foot off the gas?
So tomorrows plan will be fill the tank and check mileage with the idle
      behaving better.

Do you still think it's a good idea to do the ECU reset?

      Thanks, Bill

ECU reset is not relevant in this situation. You found the vacuum leak and that fixed the problem.

Best thing to do is go through all of the A & B connectors and erase all of the codes. This will give you a base to operate from. B-2 122 does not erase.

On the 240s, the Throttle Position Switch was just a microswitch positioned so it would click when the throttle just came off idle. If I remember correctly, on the 850 the TPS is a throttle position SENSOR that sends more than just off/on to the ECU. So no "click" to hear when you move the throttle.

I found the switch on the bottom of the throttle body as you said.
I found some fuzzy adjustment detail in my Haynes manual.

It has to go with the throttle drum seating and the linkage hitting an
adjustment screw (Seems to be the throttle plate stop)

Is there Volvo adjustment info for this stuff? Mine is a 95 850 NA.

I reset the ECU but no joy, the check engine light is still unhappy.

          Thanks, Bill

I replaced mine last year, no adjustment is needed - plain and simple.

Unless you really disassemble things, you probably shouldn't need to mess with the mounting described in Haynes. What are the codes you're getting?

I get A2 codes: 154, EGR leakage and 443, 3 way cat effiency

The idle is intermittant high. I thought it was fixed the other day
when I found a split end on a vacuum hose in the EVAP circuit.
The engine RPM behaved for a few hours then back to throwing codes.

                EGR valve leaking 850

The EGR valve is not closing all the way due to crud. This will also effect your idle. Time to pull it off again and clean it some more.

The other code is just a warning.

Fortunately for me, I don't know anything about EGR valves, but assuming you did clear the codes and this is what came back, sounds like you need to verify the EGR lines are all tight and double check your vacuum lines. The 443 is probably secondary to whatever else is wrong.

Have your radio code handy, and a clock so you can reset the time, but definitely do the ECU reset to zero out the fuel trim. I really hope this fixes your problems! Good sleuthing!

I reset the ECU this morning, but the ECU started throwing codes again.
I'm back in the head scratching mode.

TPS is attached to the throttle body, but your problem may be a dirty Idle Air Control valve or the throttle body itself. Also check the electrical connectors for same.
