Odd handling. Struts, shocks, bushings??? 850 1995

855T, 153,000 miles, original struts, shocks.

While the car isn't wandering, it does move around more than I recall it should. (I've not driven it much over the last three years. I had a company car.)

Steering isn't loose but any direction change causes a lot of wallow and body roll. At the mileage, I'm sure new struts, shocks, spring seats etc would be needed. The steering rack has a leak too so now may be the time to replace it too. Should I consider springs also and just do the whole thing?

Anyone else experience similar symptoms?

Erwin

153k on oem shocks? Egad, no wonder it wanders! In addition to the other suggestions, do the upper strut and shock mounts as well. Again, the IPD product is worth the money.

I did have to change my springs at 120K, so much sag that the front tires were rubbing. Check your wheel clearance.

Not just the mileage, but the sitting idle also has a detremental effect on the shocks/struts.

Go ahead and get new Sachs struts and shocks. If you DIY, you will save a lot of money. Just be careful taking off the ABS sensor that is attached to the strut, and scribe an outline of the strut on the brace so that the new one goes on in the same place - makes alignment easier.

Find out where the local garages take cars for their alignments and have it done there.

I would not replace the springs, just the spring seats and the 4 strut bolts(OEM).

Get new end links from IPD, they have better than OEM version for about the same cost as OEM.

If the rack leaks just a little, investigate a stop leak. But find out where the leak is coming from before you rip the whole thing out and spend a small fortune. One hose is much easier and cheaper than the entire rack.

Klaus,

Thanks. I replaced the end links about 10,000 miles ago. (5 years). I'll look at the IPD replacements if the joints have any slop. I'm good for an alignment shop too as I've used a couple here in town with excellent results. Still have the printout from the last time. Yes, I DIY, so I'll save a bit on the replacement.

About the rack leak, if it's a hose, no problem. If it's a seal I thought maybe something like Lucas power steering stop leak but it looks very thick in the bottle.

Lucas is thick, but it gets diluted with the PS fluid when you add it. It is worth a shot, the rack is quite expensive to replace.
