Key-on noise (fuel pump?) V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70R now has a noise that is too loud and doesn't go off. It's located on passenger side in the area under the headlight. Sounds like a fuel pump that won't turn off. Wife said there was a "banging" noise yesterday, but that's not there now.

Also, throttle has been "surging" at idle for a while (between 700-800 rpm) in drive, but settles down in neutral. May be related?

Anyway, what is located in this area? It's underneath stuff and before I dig in I'd like to know what it might be. It's not the alternator, PS pump, or A/C. It's farther forward.

Car's getting old enough that I guess I'd better get a good manual!

Thanks,

Steve

Well, the fuel pump is under the rear seat, right side. The idle control is just in front of the Throttle body. And the headlight wiper is under the front headlight.

The later is probably dead or dying. The little motor has a 'park' position which is supposed to turn off when it parks the wiper. Sometimes this breaks and the wiper motor keeps trying to find park. Just unplug the motor. It is a bear to remove and those wipers don't do much anyway.

Your car is getting old enough to start developing vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. Check all of the hoses and elbows for cracking.
