Update - ABS Light/shifter lock problem 850

My previous post described a sporadic problem involving a failure of the shifter unlocking mechanism along with the ABS light coming on. Additional symptoms also popped up including: 1)No turn signals, 2) No headlights and 3) loss of all dash lights when the headlights were turned on??? It was suggested that I replace either the brake switch or the ignition switch. Both made complete sense to me and I tried the brake switch first since it was 15 years old and the ignition switch was only 2 years old. Turned out to be the ignition switch. As with alot of things the replacements just don't seem to be made with the same quality as the originals. Thanks for all who offered help.

Did you get an OEM or aftermarket switch?
Doesn't seem right that a two year old switch would die.
Maybe the ignition switch socket wiring can have a loose crimp?
(just in case those gremlins reappear)

      Update - ABS Light/shifter lock problem 850

The short lived replacement is a Volvo part purchased from a dealer. Could be a bad connection but I did install a used switch first to check the fix before buying another new on. Both the used and new one eliminated the problem. Maybe I should have tried reseating the plug first???

        Update - ABS Light/shifter lock problem 850 1996

I am getting the exact same issues on my 1996 850 Turbo Sedan. What are the exact names of the "switches"? I replaced what I would consider a brake switch, but not sure if it is the same one you are talking about. I replaced the one that is against the brake pedal rod, when you press on the brake it illuminates the brake lights. What is the "ignition switch"? The problem is very intermittent, sometimes will just go away after driving for 3+ minutes, other times it requires turning car off, and back on to make it go away. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The ignition switch is alot easier to replace than the brake switch. Remove the four torx screws that hold the two steering column plastic covers in place and manuver the covers off. You may have to replease the steering column adjuster and pull it out all the way. There's just two screws that hold the ignition switch in place. Unplug the connector and remove the screws to pull off the switch. Having alot of stuff swinging on your key chain will cause the switch to go bad quicker.

            Flakey ignition switch 850 1996

            Hi Fixit,

My 850 ignition switch is doing that stuff now, Does the switch come apart?
It seems like a problem with the detent/spring/ball????

Is the switch servicable? Does it come apart?

I can get a new switch from the local Volvo dealer for $50 and change.
Is that what I want or will something cheaper from FCP or whatever do?

            Regards, Bill

They can be taken apart, but there isn't much to fix. If the spring is broken it will be hard to find a replacement. If there is just wear, you will need a new one.

It is possible to file smooth any contacts and bend the metal for even better contact. I tried di-electric grease to make it slide better.

Whatever you do, do not take the wires out of the round harness. I will not help you put them back in the correct order :>)

                Ignition switch 850 1996

The ignition switch is central to raft of functions.
I can get the Volvo Switch at the dealer for about $50.
The local Advance Auto can order a Beck-Arnley switch for $42
Havn't tried FCP yet, dunno what they sell?
It's obvious that a junk yard switch isn't a good choice,
since wear is a big issue.

                What to do?

                Bill

                  Ignition switch 850 1996

                  $54 at FCP :

I don't know what you think is wrong with your switch. If it is just not returning to pos II after start, or if one of the contacts is bad. You could pull off the switch, remove the aluminum cover and take a look.

                  Klaus
