95 850 manual tranny problems 850 1995

hi-
for the past couple weeks i've experienced trouble getting my car to shift into gear. it would require a lot of arm strength to get into first and reverse and i was met with resistance driving and going into higher gears. this morning, i couldn't get it into first or second gear and have been starting in third (you can imagine the smell of the clutch!) sometimes it goes into second but not often. i'm wondering if this is a clutch problem, or if i need to do a fluid change, or what? i bought the car used and there aren't many records. i have over 220K and have no idea if the clutch has been replaced or if a flush has ever been done. can anyone help me out? thanks!

With the engine off, you should be able to shift the tranny to 3&4 without much problem, 2&3 should also work, and shifting to 1 a little difficult - all without a clutch.

Tranny fluid flush is a good idea and always welcome. Do a google search to find the best fluid. ATF synthetic comes to mind as a possible, but I don't have a newer manual. I have been advised to use ATF in my 1967 222 with an M41 and OD. -- discussion on Volvospeed:

Your brake fluid is also used in your slave cylinder. If that is low or very dirty, that could be a problem.

Your clutch springs could be wearing. 220K is just about time for a clutch replacement. Not bad, considering other car makers usually replace the clutch at 100K or less. If you replace the clutch, remember the rear main seal.
