Help!! V70-XC70

Gave my 2003 V70 NA to my sister for a few weeks while her car was being repaired. She called in a panic that it started making noise and the check engine went on. Had it towed to a kind of recommended service station near her and here is the bad news.

It was/is a rod bearing and the mechanic feels that it the bottom end was that starved for oil there is most likely some top (cam, etc) damage that might show up latter. Recommends not rebuilding this engines (too costly) but getting a used engine and installing, with new timing belt (and related parts) new clutch and throw out bearing. This will have some type of warranty (12 months) and all this will be about 4K. What do you guys think?

Would I need to get the same year 2003, engine? This is a NA engine, can I get a turbo installed? The car itself is in great shape and I'm kinda debating on what to do.

    Sorry Moosed. We got totally off subject.

    Do you know why the engine ran out of oil yet? This is not a common thing for the 5 cyl engine. You should be able to install any 2002+ normally aspirated engine in your car with little to no modification in the wiring harness.

    By all means, get the clutch replaced if you have over 150K on your current one. Get a new rear main seal, just because it is easy to do. Get new oil separator box and hoses. Get new radiator hoses and other little stuff.

    But $4K does sound a bit high. I would shop around. Erie Volvo will give a 12 month warranty on a used engine.

    No oil V70-XC70

    If the oil level was that low, I agree with the mechanic. You need to contact Erievovo.com by phone and ask for a good price including shipping.

    By all means, a new clutch and rear main seal is a good idea. Along with new oil separator and all new vacuum lines.

    Going turbo will be costly. Not only will you have to buy a turbo, intercooler, different vacuum lines, engine wiring harness, computers, air cleaner box - and the list goes on. Your manual tranny is quite capable with the current engine, faster than the light pressure turbo with an automatic.

    Ask your mechanic to break down the cost for you. Pulling and reinstalling the engine/tranny just to do a clutch is about $1500 in labor depending on the hourly charge.

    Or, LOL, you could wait a week or two and buy a 1998 V70R for $4500!!

    I'd recommend a second opinion on rebuilding the engine too. Since that guy didn't know if you had top damage it might not have any (although unlikely). But then again it might. I wouldn't go turbo just because you have to replace all sorts of other components and add extra hardware. These engines aren't that dissimilar so bolting a turbo on isn't a huge deal, but making it run with all the software/ hardware in your car gets tricky... Oh, and they'll probably add 750-1000 for the turbo engine..

    Someone one here did a main bearing job a while back, they might be able to tell you what they recommend.. I doubt you're planning on doing it yourself, but if you are know that this is a BIG job. Since you loaned the car out, I'm guessing you don't need this car at all times and could live without it for a week or two. If so you should probably call around and see if anyone rebuilds the engine and how much they'd want. Then if you want to save some more money find out how much if you bring them the engine. I'm quite sure if you do the labor of taking it out/putting it in yourself you can save yourself $1000 easy. Then again, you have to give up a lot of your time to get the engine out and put it back in, so..


    Also, any information as to why it was starved is always helpful..

    some of the other forums have folks more familiar with the P2 cars. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help you but don't hesitate to seek advice on one of the other boards.


    As to what engine to get it depends a lot on what engine you have in it now.

    I would not advise going to a turbo from an NA (or the other way around) - that kind of swap usually gets more complicated as the computers/wiring harness will need to be changed as well and that adds cost and complexity. If you're doing the work yourself and don't need the car for a while you might be able to muddle through it. For a daily you need to get it back quick and these things add serious delays. Again maybe someone will have better advice for you from their experience.

    Internal damage is a pretty uncommon failure for these cars. What engine did you have? Is there still lots of oil in the engine (ie: no catastrophic oil loss)?What were your oil change intervals? What brand and grade of oil were you using? what brand was your oil filter? What is your mileage?

    We'd all like this info to help avoid failures on our cars.

    I find it hard to imagine there's any damage to the top end, albeit without more info on what caused the failure it's pretty hard to say one way or the other.

    Write/call Erie Volvo and get a quote on an engine and ask them what engines/years you can use. They will almost surely have one for you, and they provide a good warranty, AND they have the type of info you're looking for in terms of what you can swap out without too much trouble - they'll probably give it up for free if you're seriously inquiring about buying an engine from them at the same time.

    If you do go for a new engine definitely do all the new stuff on the replacement before it goes in.
    - timing belt and all rollers and tensioner
    - serpentine belt and rollers and maybe tensioner
    - cam seals front and rear
    - crank/main seals front and rear
    - PCV system including intake gasket
    - clean throttle body with new gasket
    - new clutch and throwout bearing (really it's not automatic?!)

      on second thought, Volvo has some pretty wicked incentives on new cars right now. You might think about spending your money on a brand new car instead?

      Loyalty bonus of $2000, 0% financing, plus the other incentives.... it could add up to a good deal for you.

        On all of the wear parts except tires! But they stopped making the V70R, and the new engines are all 6 cyl (3.2L) which puts a dent in your mpg. And automatic only, which is a real shame.

        For 2011, the V70 goes away. Only the XC70 remains, but there will be an option to get FWD on the XC70????

          All of them? I was at the stealer last week, and saw the C70 with the 5, and also that 30 thing had the 5, I believe. Gone for next year? I was guessing the only reason the 5 lasted this long was gas went up a few years ago.

          I asked about the V70, and they said they only get them if someone orders them. Everyone wants AWD so they get the XC. Personally I don't like spending extra money for stuff I don't need.

            The 5 cyl will still be in the 30/40/50/60 models. Blame it on the US consumer; they can't drive a manual shift car, they want a lot of torque and bhp, and they don't know how to drive!

            AWD is better for the US market, it makes the car safer in the wet and snow with a 2 mpg drop in consumption. AWD also makes things more complicated, but the US consumer is used to not working on their cars and getting a new car when the repairs get to be too much.

            Of course, Volvo NA, doesn't help any. They present the 'new' S60 with all of the bells and whistles, and a premium price tag to make the dealer happy (they think). Interesting because the 850s started with the base in 1993, a GLT and turbo in 1994, and then the T5/R in 1995+. Volvo sold a LOT of 850s.

          Their current warranty safe + secure program is really pretty impressive.

          And yeah, they've pretty much committed to a FWD version of the XC70 in lieu of the V70.

          Still no news of bringing the new V60 across the pond though.

          I'm a bit confused by their current line-up esp considering the 'unofficially announced' products as well

          - C20? (rumours of a 1 series/A1 competitor)
          - C30
          - XC30 (unofficial)
          - S40
          - V50
          - S60
          - V60
          - XC60
          - V70 (UK only as of next year)
          - XC70
          - S80
          - XC90
          - S90 (unofficial)

          I don't see how they can sustain the whole line-up.... changes are afoot to be sure.


          I have to say though, I'm really excited about the new Focus and the new Focus based C-Max and Grand C-Max coming to NA:
