xc70 question V70-XC70 2001

2001 xc70 with what appears to be a busted tranny 123k miles....says you can drive it but when the fluid heats up it no longer rolls...I have priced a used tranny at 700 bucks but is there a chance this one can be fixed or rebuilt any cheaper? Just wondering if this is a symptom of something other than a toasted tranny... I am actually going in the direction of replacing the tranny on the factored costs but just thought I would ask before I bid. I am looking at it for my daughter to drive this winter.

Thanks!

If the torque converter starts to slip when hot, replace the tranny. If it is a dirty solenoid, there are 5 of them, they can be 'cleaned' by you or replaced. A poor solenoid should trigger a code or two.

You know the drill, check the fluid. If it is dark brown, there is a lot of internal wear. It is a crap shoot, and you know it. The labor to R&R a tranny is not cheap.
