A/C works briefly 850 1994

Recently got this 850 and blindly (ie not knowing if it was low or not) added a can of refrigerant. Prior to this and currently, the REC and AC lights above the switches will blink for about 15 seconds when the car is started. The air blows cold for about five minutes, then smells stale and is then warmish, as if i turned the AC off. If i'm on a short trip (<3 miles) when i restart it might blow cold for about the same amount of time.

At times, on a cold start, with the blower off, cold air seeps out of the vents. I believe today the AC worked the whole 20 minutes to work (windows were down but felt cold), but was the same as it had been on the way home.

Could this somehow have something to do with whatever it is that senses the cabin temperature?

Thanks helping out.

Sounds like the compressor clutch is a little worn. If you're somewhat handy you can try the classic "bread bag clip" fix.

The climate control codes are in B-1. Find out how to read the codes and clear them. The codes that do not clear are the ones that you fix. Usually one or both of the cabin temp sensors. If the sensors are not working, the ECC cannot regulate the temperature.

As you noticed, you can slide the blower switch to a manual setting, set the temp to coldest for both sides and get AC. But you really need to fix the errors in the ECC system.

Below are 2 links that will help you read your codes using the diagnostic boxes on the passenger fender. The second is a list of all of the codes. You might want to print them and put them in the glove box.
