tranny noise!! part 2 850

Thank you to everyone that responded. I appreciate you comments and suggestions. I wanted to update you and maybe get new information from you.

I picked up the car this morning and spoke to the mechanic (he works on all 3 of my Volvos). He said that the sound is coming from the flywheel (flex plate) area. Testing the car, he removed the serpentine belt and drove the car and it still made the horrendous noise (that why he doesn't think it the tensioner). While driving the car, he said that it shifted OK and under very hard acceleration he was able to get the sound go away. However, when he turned the car off and on the noise came back. Sure enough, I was able to get the noise to go away during my drive home.

Any thought will be much appreciated. And yes, I am going to take the car to someone for a second opinion.

Thanks guys!

You can localise the noise to some extent by using a piece of vinyl tubing like a stethoscope ... just be careful not to let it get tangled in anything moving! If the screeching is really loud even at idle, you might need an earplug in the other ear ;-)

Your mechanic drove your car with no alternator or power steering? Braver than I. You had a really good battery!

Time for a second opinion, and a check of the transmission fluid level just for good measure.
