oil light flashes on after letting off the accelerator S70

2000 S70 110K non-turbo, the oil light flashes on for a second or two when you back off the accelerator pedal all the way. Should I be worried? Is this a symptom of generally low oil pressure?

Thanks,
Chris

The warning light is for low oil pressure, not oil level. Your car does not have many miles on the engine and if you are not using synthetic, there could be sludge build up. Or one of the O rings on the oil pickup tube could be compromised, which requires the oil pan to be dropped to fix.

Klaus, do the o-rings make up the sump, or is that something different?

The O rings keep the oil pickup tubes in place, otherwise they can suck in air.

Removing the oil pan is not a cake walk. The gasket is liquid and rollered on, some of the suspension and oil/tranny/PS lines get in the way. The bolts are 2 different sizes, so you need to remember which one goes where...

          Klaus,
Started in on the o-ring project today. When I removed the oil filter it was crushed. The filter material collapsed and the center hole of the filter was nonexistent. What are you thoughts of reduced oil flow through the filter causing the flashing oil light? (ie, should I just do an oil change and see what happens)

          Thanks,
          Chris

We really want to know, it is important. Also, who installed it.

I am not familiar with the new style filters, is there an up/down?

Took some pics of the crushed filter. I can not see a manufacture name on it.

Chris , Thanks for posting the photos. Is it possible to check with the oil change shop as to what brand filter they use? I will try and get photos of mine posted along with the manufacturer.

                  Jot,
I purchased the car with this problem and lucked out it was just the filter. I texted the college student I purchased the car from but he has not responded.

I hate to say it but it looks like the local Volvo dealer did the last oil change.
From the carfax report I ran.

                    Chris,
Thanks for the info. The filter pictures are not a MANN/VOLVO filter. The oil changer will not even show the owner of the franchise the failed filter or let me talk with him (he was in the shop)

            Chris,
Do you still have the damaged filter and if so what are the markings on the end? I have an S70 GLT SE 2000 with the same problem.

Just some clarification, is yours one of the ones with the permanent casing and you just replace out the filter?

If so and the filter was 'crushed' and out of place it could let the low pressure gauge go off.. I'd definitely do an oil change before I dropped the pan.

You did check oil level right? Even though its pressure not level, if you don't have enough fluid how can you maintain enough pressure?

Yes it is cartridge filter (reuse the cover, bell, not sure what it's actually called) Not really sure why the oil pressure would temporally drop when the accelerator was released. The oil pressure light would only stay on for 1/2 to 1 second. But it seems good now after a new filter and oil.

oil light flashes on after letting off the accelerator S70

Well, the engines running high and there's tons of pressure. Then you let off, it drops pressure really quick because it isn't forced through the collapsed filter (just means that its more difficult for the oil to get where it needs to go) with enough force at first. Then as the system recovers, the pressure comes back up the gauge goes off...

Think of squeezing a bottle of katsup. Hold it upside down and squeeze, tons will come out. All of a sudden stop squeezing the flow will stop (or greatly slow) then pick up again after a moment..

By all means, change the oil and filter! A crushed filter? Please tell me that it was not a Mann filter.

Just use cheap 10W30, in case there are other problems. You can switch to synthetic later.

I completed the oil change (with a Mann filter) and took the car for a test drive. No flashing oil light!!! Must have been the filter.

              Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear it! R&Ring the oil pan is not for the faint of heart.
