The driver's seat on my XC70 just started making a clunk when I come to a stop.
I can duplicate the noise by pushing the seat back forwards and backwards. I've tried tightening all the screws I can reach, to no effect. The noise is coming from RH seat rail area.

Any ideas? How hard is it to remove the seat?

If you've got the money.... Volvo actually has a fix for this. It is a mini-damper that goes between the seat frame and rail to reduce movement.

IIRC it's about $150.00USD plus installation.

The good news is that your car is still so solid that you notice the seat clunk!

As you found out, there are only 4 bolts holding down the seat to the car's frame. If those bolts are tight, then it is the seat slide mechanism that is loosening.

If you remove the seat from the car, there might be a bent lever that is not visible normally.

It looks like the rear of the front seat mount is bolted from the bottom, is this correct? Is there a "trick" to removing these bolts?

There is a plastic cover hiding the bolts at the rear of the runners. Nothing on this car gets bolted from the undercarriage.

The plastic is held down by 2 clips, pull up on the front side closest the seat center.

Took the seat out, but couldn't find anything loose. I can now tell that the popping noise is in the RH seat BACK, and not the rail.

How do I remove the seat back cover?

There are 4 hog clips at the bottom of the upright portion, cut them off and replace them with plastic zip ties when you put the cover back on. You will also have to remove the large plastic side cover, lift up in the front and slide rearwards. If you have a side air bag, I suggest you take the red clip and put it in the detonator button.

The vinyl/leather then pulls up like a dress. There are 2 more hog clips half way up.

Your seat back might just be slightly loose at the metal to metal junction. This is normal wear and cannot be fixed, as far as I know.

Turn the knob counter clockwise, making the lumbar adjustment very slack. Then push the knob back in and turn some more until it stops. Mine wouldn't pull off, but JRL (very knowledgable) just says pull harder!
