Digital Thermometer S80

The thermometer in the dash of my 2001 S80 T6 has been know to go crazy from time to time ever since we bought it. For instance, today here in Alabama it was reading 56° when we left home at 11:00 AM. The actual temperature was in the low 90s. The reason this is a problem is it interferes with the AC temperature. The AC temperature would cycle betweeen cool and warm. I verified with the dealer that the two are interconnected. He suggested it could be the sensor. Strangely enough the cold readings returned as we neared home. Here are my questions:

What would cause this error only near my home?

Where is the sensor located?

Is this the most likely cause of this problem?

Any other ideas?

We drove the same route to Birmingham and back Tuesday. Pretty much the same weather as before. The outside thermometer behaved perfectly. I guess the space aliens were not operating their transporter beam in Gadsden.

Temp sensors move from model to model and year to year. Call the dealer parts dept and ask where yours is located and how much for a new one. They are not expensive and easy to replace.

Sounds like yours defaults to 10C when there is no reading.

It does continue to change as you drive along, even when it is obviuously off. Today, when it regained its senses, it incremented up buy 1° until it stabilized. One the way home it did the opposite. It does not seem to be an intermittent signal. I plan to put it into my lift and look for the sensor and check the connections, but as I said, it has done this its whole life. It just never would do it for the dealer under warranty.

Either find a priest to bless your home or move. There is something wrong with the place you live, not the car.

The sensor is actually in the right side rear view mirror. There's 1 in the left side too but that one is for the engine management system. There is a little protruding nodule on the under side of the mirror. That is the sensor.

How do you get to it to replace it?

On the 850/70 cars, the mirror glass can be pried off. It is attached in the back by 3/4 clips that fit in a hole. After the glass is loose, you can unplug the heater element.

The mirror must be turned toward the car, electrically, so you can get some fingers behind it. Use the other hand to catch the glass.

Of course, a dealer can plug in his code reader to see if the temp sensor is working, but in your case I think Holy Water is required :>)
