check engine light problem 850

Last issue resolved, thank you KlausC.

Now my check engine light is on (also traks off light, etc. still on) and car seems to start and run okay although yesterday when I started it, the first try it did not catch and I heard a noise that sounded like air escaping from something
then it started on the second try. Are there a lot of things that could be connected to the 'check engine light'? Should I try and diagnose this or do I now need to take it to a mechanic, which worries me as there don't seem to be any good volvo mechanics in this area. Need help!

There are at least 1,000 reason that could turn on a CEL. That is why a visit to an autoparts store near you to borrow a scanner is so important.

It could be something related to emmisions, which is why your car still runs 'good'. But, somewhere, the engine is running at default mode because it is getting bad data. This must be addressed and repaired.

So, find out what the codes are. Be sure and write them down in case there are more than one.

Leaking air could be the idle control or the cold air pump, for starters.

First off let me say sorry, as I did not put the model year, nor did I put that it is a turbo, if that makes a difference or not.
As to the codes, someone put the scanner on my car, but it did not pop up codes, instead it had a readout which said "02 sensor, bank 1, ser 1." I do not know if that means anything to you or not. If not I will drive it tomorrow to an auto parts store and have them do it again and try to get the actual codes. I just didn't want to take a chance on driving it if I don't have to. There were not any other codes or words on the scanner. Let me know if any of this makes sense. Thank you again.
