How to remove the tailgate inner panel? V70-XC70 1999

My tailgate inner liner is hanging loose on one side. How do I get it off to repair it? Also how do I fix the gate ajar light so it's not always on? Thanks.

IPD sells a tailgate clip repair kit. I used it on my daughter's V70; it was easy to install the little metal reinforcement plates. Highly recommended. And Klaus is right, while you are at it, also install new tailgate struts.

Is it loose on the top or bottom? The top clips tend to fall apart and need reinforcement. The bottom clips will break when you try to pop the panel off.

How to get it off? Remove the plastic indent that the inside handle is in. Not fun, but it does come off. Then slide fingers or large screwdriver around the bottom to get the clips out of the door. Dealer has new clips!!!

The door ajar light has nothing to do with the panel, unless it was wedged in the door frame. With the door up, push the latch closed 2 positions, I use a phillip screwdriver in the round hole to do this. The light in the dash should go off, if not the micro switch inside the latch is broken which cannot be fixed. Pull the handle to unlock it.

If the light goes out with the latch in pos 2, consider moving the latch bar on the bumper. 2 T40 screws hold down the bar, just move it about 1/16th of an inch rearward. Clean out the dirt first :)

You might want to consider getting new struts, the door should not 'fall' down when closing. There are also some rubber bushings that the tailgate rests on that are probably a bit hard by now.

Thanks. The left side of the panel is loose at the top and bottom. I can see/feel spots where plastic upholstery plugs hold it tight, but they are gone. I think the problem is that unnamed others slam the tailgate. I suspected this could be a problem when I noticed tailgate repair items for sale on ebay.

I've pried and pulled on the inner handle indent, but was afraid I'd break it. Does it just come straight out? Is it just a pressure fitting? I was thinking that if I pulled the panel the rest of the way off I could cut the wire to the switch and be done with it.

Thanks again. Thanks, too for the advice on ABS modules. I pulled mine and sent it to Victor for repair, then reinstalled it without incident. I cleared all codes and have had my car safety inspected.

You cannot remove the tailgate panel without first removing the plastic for the handle. You will notice that the plastic is cut on both sides. It is pressure fitted and all plastic. Just work a screwdriver under the lip and pray :>)

Don't clip just any wire! You might just disable the electric motor for the lock.
