instructions on how to tear down the upper part of the motor. 850 1995

Good afternoon,

I'm in need of tearing open a motor to fix some oil leaks in the upper portion. Does anyone have instruction as to how to do this? What tools are needed? What are the torque specs on all the bolts? Sequence to undo it and sequence to redo it?

Looking at doing this tomorrow. Thank you.

Good intentions for a quick fix will take more than a day. I suggest you get the Haynes manual for an 850 which has pics and torque specs for head removal.

If you could be more precise regarding the leaks, you might find that it is leaking at the rear cam seal, which is an easy replacement.

What you really need it to determine what is causing the leak. It could be that you have a plugged PCV which is causing the leak.

I have the haynes manual already but it is limited in this regard.

I am leaking from the rear cam seal closest to the fire wall.
I am also leaking from the rear head area near there as well.
I also have some seepage of oil in the plug areas as well.

The entire PCV system is brand new on the car. I replace the old at 300K for which it was the original setup. Plus every time I do an oil change I'm checking that part of the system anyways, cleaning and/or replacing as necessary

So all I'm looking to do is take the top covers off up to the cams.

I have the o-rings, the volvo sealant, front and rear cam seals for parts.

I've already checked the mitchell1 software and that was totally useless for this vehicle. I just received a bunch of information from AllData with pictures, but they have me diging in much deeper than what is truly necessary.

The car has just under 331K on it now. By the end of the year I will be near 350K for mileage.

look forward to any and all information I can get here. I will be doing this tomorrow and should be able to do this in about 4 - 6 hours. The Volvo mechanics say 7 hrs., but I also know that that time is overly inflated.

Thanks for the replies and help.

Had you jusat been replacing the rear cam seal:

But you want to take off the cam cover, and that takes a little extra work. The engine must be positioned so that cyl #1 is at TDC, otherwise it will be difficult to get the cams back in, and timing belt back on.

Getting the cover off is not easy, you cannot pry with a screwdriver. The cover must come off flat.

Follow the Haynes manual as to putting the cams and cover back on. You must build your own special tool to hold the cams down and in position. The cover bolts are not strong enough to pull the cams into position.
