I've searched this site, but didn't find opinions on oil filters. I often get Mobil Ones, but sometimes stoop to Frams. What's your opinion?

Of course it does. We were thinking 2008! You car need either Mann or OEM, and Mann can be bought at FCPGroton for less than $40 for a case of 10. Include 10 crush washers in your order, plus a cabin filter or 2.

Why are Volvos so endearing? Its just a car.

You will get lots of opinions on this. Mine is as follows:

1) Better filters have anti-drainback valves. As an example, Fram offers cheaper as well as more expensive filters and lists the valve as a feature only on the more expensive lines (see their web page as well as one of their packages). I suspect but don't know that the Mann, Bosch, etc which cost more, have the valves.

2) I found oil filters at Walmart which were very light in weight vs familiar ones. I suspect but again don't know that these cheapies lack the valve.

2) On some car models and brands the warranty is not valid if it is determined that a filter without the valve was in use. One car I own (not a Volvo) states this in the warranty book.

Even for the new P2 cars, I still like Mann or OEM inserts. I guess their reputation for the last 50 years means something.

Hello, A friend of mine was sent to an extensive lubrication class. Wix and Hastings were said to be the best. I trust Mann,OEM and Baldwin as well but I don't know why. I find it hard to trust the makers of promotional cheapies (Fram and Purolater) when they claim their premium filters-Extra Guard and Pure One- are so superior. Perhaps all you can do is go by weight. Wix, Hastings, Baldwin and Mann weigh more. Kira
