Hand brake cable 850 1995

I just did the hand brake cable replacement in my 1995 855. I completed the feeding of the cable into the car compartment and now I am stucked in the other end of the hand brake cable. I tried very hard to push the cable end into the rear hub hole but no luck. The old cable was easy to pop out by wiggling the cable. The new cable did not want to go in.

Any help or idea to push this cable end into the rear hub is much apprecaited.

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

PS. The job required to pull up the back seat carpet in order to get to the clips which held the cable down in place under the carpet. Haynes manuel did not say anything about this clip. Otherwise it was not too bad to pull out the old cable and insert the new cable.

    Hand brake cable 850 1995

Hi, just did the hand brakes of my 850/94 few weeks ago.

when wiggling out the old cable end the plastic fitting broke out and the inner part stuck inside the drum hole. in case yours did the same,it's no wonder that the new is not going into it's place. check for a plastic ring of 5mm width inside the drum cable opening and remove it before intalling the new cable end.

I did the comparison of the old and new cables. They were the same in terms of the shape and length of the cable ends. So, there was nothing stuck inside the rear wheel hub hole when I removed the old cables. I tried the Volvo tech. suggestion, cleaned the rear wheel hub hole as much as possible with battery terminal wire brush. Then I used some grease inside the hole and on the new cable ends. The cable ends went into the hole without too much problem. I did not hear any "click" sound but cable ends went in and flushed with the hole opening.

      Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the tip. I will take a look at the old cable and will also check the hole. I did talk to Volvo tech this morning, he mentioned that hole had lots of rust there. So, need to clean up the rust first then apply some grease to aid the insertion of the plastic cable end.

      Thanks,

It's been a while since your last post so I suppose all is going well otherwise. The large cable end does not go through the hole in the holder, just the cable, and then the end goes down into the groove made to hold the end of the cable.
Do not connect the other end to the hand brake unitl you have it connected to the drum first, you need the slack.

      Klaus,

Thanks for the response. As you said, I have not connected the cable under the parking lever yet due to the extra slack to connect the lever mechanism and installation of the snap rings. As I mentioned in the original post, I could not push the cable end into the rear wheel hub hole. As the other member suggested, the hole might have the 5mm plastic ring broken off stucked inside. I will double check the old cables - still have it here.

The section near the rear wheel hub of the old cables were frozen (both sides) such that I could pull the handbrake to lock the rear wheels but not able to release the lock after releasing the lever.

Other than this car runs fine. Well, 2 more things to do - (1) replace front strut and spring assembly. I have the new strut spring assemblies ready, just need time to install them. (2) need to replace both side delta-link arm bushings. The big one at the end of each link. The rubber in the lower of the bushings are dry and cracked.

      Thanks,

      Ching-Ho Cheng
