No power to wheels, tranny problem? 850

The car used to take off when the gas was pressed but now when the gas is pressed, the car slowly picks up speed. The rpm gauge almost red lines before the car changes gears. When it does change gears, it is very rough and jerky, and then it is slow to speed up again.

A friend of mine was revving the engine (in neutral) shortly before the lack of power to the wheels began. Any help or ideas would be great.

Thanks, Nick

Are there any codes in the A-1? Almost sounds like your friend revved it a few times while in gear and cooked the ATF.

The pump for the ATF is based on engine rpm, not speed of car. It is possible that the high revs moved some sludge and clogged the internal filter. This filter cannot be cleaned unless the tranny case is removed and opened up.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a code reader or know what the A-1 and ATF are. Time to take the car to the shop, you think?

Thanks again
Nick

Your car comes with a code reader. It is on the passenger fender in the engine compartment. It lets you look for codes in the tranny, engine, ignition, instrument panel, seats, climate control, etc.

ATF = automatic transmission fluid

If engine repairs are not your 'thing', then find a good shop that is familiar with 850 volovs. These cars are not complex and still relatively easy to work on.

Step one is to check fluid level.

Step two is to look at fluid quality. If the fluid looks or smells bad, try changing it. Might help, might not, but doesn't really cost much in the terms of what could be wrong.

Keep your friend out of the car.

Thanks for your reply and your advise. I will try both in regards to the car and the friend.

Thanks again,
Nick
