CEL on again and OBD check indicates coil no 2 fault V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

About 6 weeks ago the check engine light in our 98 v70 GLT came on. Quick check at nearbu shop indicated ignition coil no 2 was faulty. Engine was running smmothly and mech suggested he reset the light and see what happens, since sometimes these error codes come on without any real error. Now CEL is on again.

After first episode I changed spark plugs. They looked fairly OK, nothing special with cyl no 2.

I presume the car has a Bosch ignition and injection system.

Any suggestions? Go back to shop to check again? Buy new coil at JY?

Thanks for any help

Gustaf

Your 1998 has coil overs? Check the coil by getting the code read at your local autoparts store, then swap coil #2 with #3. If you then get a P0303 instead of P0302, you have a bad coil.

Hi,

Car has induvidual coils for each spark plug/cylinder, if that is what you mean by coil overs. They are numbered with marks, 1 mark for cyl no 1 , 2 for no 2 etc, so I presumed there was some kind of individualization of these coils and that they shalt not be swapped?

Thannks for any help, and sorry for late reply, was travelling.

Gustaf

Same coil for all cylinders. #1 is on the passenger side, #5 is on the driver's side. Coils are not cheap, so only replace them when they fail. They will fail due to the high heat under the plastic cover - design flaw that wasn't addressed until after 2001 or 2002.

Most autoparts stores will lend you a code reader for parking lot use, take advantage of the free service.

Hi,

Checked with OBD reader before doing anything else, still P0302, before swapping coils. Have now erased codes and will swap coils. Will come back here if (when) CEL comes back on.

I also got an P1081, my code reade says this is prioprietary manufacturer code. I assume it is the service interval, since this lamp had come turned on. Erased that with the trip meter trick.
